The Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg, FL, invites emerging artists currently residing in Florida to submit entries for possible exhibition in the sixth annual Fresh Squeezed: Emerging Artists in Florida. The exhibition will be held at the Morean Arts Center April 9 – June 23, 2022. The purpose of this exhibition is to nurture and advance the careers of emerging visual artists while also giving our community the opportunity to discover exciting new art being made in our region.

The Morean Galleries will be divided into six spaces for the purposes of this show, giving each selected artist what will essentially be a solo exhibition. Works in any medium will be accepted, and community-oriented, site-specific installations are encouraged (see gallery floor plan). Each artist will have the opportunity to participate in artist panels and gallery talks during the run of the exhibition, to enable them to interact with potential collectors and raise their visibility in our community. Morean staff will work closely with the selected artists to assist them in photographing, pricing and marketing their work. Our Fresh Squeezed program aims to provide emerging artists with resources needed to develop a sustainable artistic practice.

Eligibility: The exhibition and competition is open to all emerging artists (age 18 or older) who are current residents of Florida, without restriction to medium. The Morean is defining an emerging artist as one who has never had a solo show in the state of Florida. A solo show constitutes an exhibition in a gallery, arts center, or museum of at least three weeks in length and with an opening reception. One exception: solo BFA or MFA shows at a college or university are acceptable. All work must be original, completed within the last two years, and not previously exhibited at the Morean. The Morean’s curatorial staff has the final authority for selection.

To submit, please include:

1) A brief biography and artist statement describing your work/process (1 page/3000 characters or less)

2) 5 to 10 images of work that would be included in the exhibition, or work that is similar in nature to work you would produce for the show, if accepted. If you are submitting video work, you may submit up to 5 files. All work must have been completed within the last two years.

Optional: If submitting a site-specific installation, please include a schematic drawing as one of your images and describe how you would incorporate a specific space into your work. Please indicate the space you are interested in (see floor plan).

Categories and size limitations: There is no size limitation, but the work must be reasonably adaptable to the Morean galleries. All visual arts media are encouraged.

Liability: All reasonable precautions will be taken by the Morean to ensure protection of submitted work upon receipt at the Morean. Work will be insured for the duration of the exhibition while on site at the Morean. No liability will be assumed by Morean Arts Center for damage incurred or loss of work while in transit. Artists are advised to insure their work during shipping.

Agreement: Submitting an entry form to this exhibition constitutes an agreement on the part of the artists with all conditions in this prospectus. No work accepted for exhibition may be withdrawn before the close of the exhibition. The Morean reserves the right to refuse an entry if, upon arrival, the exhibitions staff finds the work unacceptable. Sales are encouraged and the Morean retains a 40% commission on all works sold during the exhibition. Artists will be paid for sold works within 30 days of the close of the exhibition.

Judging: Selection of artists for the exhibition will be done by the curatorial staff based on the images/plans submitted. The committee reserves the right to eliminate any work which does not meet the standards of quality for the exhibition.

Shipping and pickup of artwork: Accepted work may be hand-delivered or shipped (pre-paid) to arrive no later than April 1, 2022. Artwork will be accepted up to two weeks prior to the delivery deadline. Insurance while in transit is the artist’s responsibility. Unsold works which were originally shipped to the Morean will be shipped back to the artist at the Morean’s expense.
