Brilliance of Now, Annual Juried Exhibition

'Brilliance of Now' invites visual media artists of Hawai’i to explore life and existence in this moment. Rooted in our DNA and memories of the past, the mind oscillates between what has already occurred and thoughts of the future. With evolving realities and shifting perceptions, one is always in a state of flux and change. Validating the concept that now is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is the understanding that we are not who we once were, and we are not who we will be in the future. As creative beings, how can one honor the space we are in right now? What has emerged from acknowledgment of places “traveled” through emotions such as disbelief, wonder, joy and grief? What has been broken and where is there growth? What has been learned and what forgotten? In this time, how does one recognize and celebrate the brilliance of now?

Born and raised in Kailua, O’ahu, Mina Elison currently serves as Communications Director & Curator at the Donkey Mill Art Center in Keauhou, Kona 'Akau on Hawai'i. Dedicated to creating experiences in our community for the sharing of stories and mo'olelo through artistic expression, Mina hopes these experiences serve as a catalyst for reflection, introspection, connecting and meaningful dialogue. From historic artifacts to contemporary art, Mina has worked with diverse collections and is interested in the exploration of artifacts as art and art as artifact, challenging the ways in which we learn from and relate to the world around us. As the former Museum Curator at Kona Historical Society, Mina earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in French and Anthropology and a Masters degree in Museum Studies from New York University. She has served as a juror for several exhibitions in Hawai'i and has curated numerous exhibitions in Hawai'i and California.
