We are interested in artists that are fifty years old and older for this online exhibition. Too often, youth is rewarded, and age is neglected. We aim to celebrate those practicing their photo-based art or photography for a long time and those who have only recently discovered their artistic talent. Fifty photo-based artists 12 image portfolios will make up the exhibition.

Juror: Gordon Stettinius

In 2010, Gordon Stettinius, an artist and educator, founded an independent publishing company, Candela Books, which has published monographs from Gita Lenz, Chris McCaw, Willie Anne Wright, Paul Thulin and others.  Candela’s most recent release is Dr. Falke’s ORACULUM by Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick.

Soon after, Stettinius founded Candela Gallery in 2011, with the mission being to bring notable photographers to Richmond, Virginia, in an effort to elevate the discourse around contemporary photography.  The gallery produces 7-8 feature exhibitions a year; one or two book-related exhibitions each year; and one unbridled, free-for-all, group exhibition each summer.  This summer exhibition, Unbound!, has given rise to an annual celebration, which raises funds and acquires work from the annual exhibition for the Candela Collection, which will be donated, ultimately, to another permanent collection.

Candela Gallery has a community-minded philosophy, often presenting political, environmental, and/or subversive work, but their foundation is built upon an emphasis on the photographic object and its craft.
