Pattern and Repetition

Online Exhibition December 23, 2021 – January 23, 2022

Beginning in the post-war period, pattern and repetition assumed an unquestionable centrality to the visual arts. Prior to this, neither was absent (there were Islamic arabesques, mosaics, Chevron stones in African architecture, and the material cultures of craft more generally to name but a few examples). However, in Western art, it was only the advent of modernism, which sought to incorporate these non-European influences with a number of formalist explorations of space, that pattern and repetition came into their own as self-conscious subjects and methods of artistic practice. Site:Brooklyn is seeking work that builds on, questions, and explores, in the widest way possible, pattern and replicated forms, in all styles and across all mediums.

About the Juror: Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy (She/Her) is a New York and Los Angeles-based curator, writer, and arts administrator of contemporary art and craft. Her current research investigates the “aesthetics of optimism,” humor, cuteness, maximalism, and the decorative as powerful subversive tools of protest. Amplifying the voices of BIPOC artists is central to her practice. She serves as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York. Since 2016, she has been part of MAD’s curatorial team, helping organize over twenty exhibitions and projects. She also oversees MAD’s Burke Prize, a prestigious contemporary craft award. She is a published author and independently curates exhibitions across the country.

About the Gallery:                                 Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
