Munich Terminal One LLC and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (State Arts Council) are pleased to present the Newark Airport 2D Concourse Art Inclusion Opportunity. This exciting opportunity is accepting submissions from adult professional visual artists who are current residents of New Jersey. Artists from across the State of NJ are eligible to submit their images of horizontal compositions for consideration. Qualified artists are encouraged to submit their work samples to be considered for a 3-5 year exhibit in the new Newark Airport Terminal A Concourse. Selected artists will be paid a $25,000 stipend for use of their work, and Munich Terminal One/PANYJ will print the selected image(s), install them on the display locations as “wraps”, update the wraps as needed during the 3-5 years of exhibition, and will provide promotion of the exhibition

The project will be unveiled in Spring 2022 at the new Newark Airport Terminal A, and will be on display for between 3 and 5 years. Artists’ names and image information will be included with the display exhibition.

Artists are encouraged to be considerate of the ridership and public nature of art in transit spaces. The PANYNJ Art Selection Council will review each submission received and will select up to 3 artists’ work to be included in the exhibition. In addition to the digital display of their work in the terminal the artists’ name and images of the project will be shared with the public through PANYNJ and the State Arts Council's social media and other communication platforms.

Artists should submit up to 6 examples of completed work to be considered for use. Work samples submitted will be the basis for the Selection Committee’s consideration.  PANYNJ and their contracted terminal management company, EWR Terminal One LLC which is a subsidiary of Munich Airport, Europe’s only five star airport, will work with the selected artists to approve final digital image submissions, will produce and install, and schedule the exhibition of the works on large public locations in the terminal. Each selected artist will receive a $25,000 stipend in exchange for use of the artists’ work. Artists will retain copyright to their work.

For this project, we are seeking from each selected artist 2 completed, horizontal images with compositional flow, visual appeal and a sense of movement across the length that will work well displayed opposite each other on large walls. Specifically, images submitted should be able to meet the compositional needs of the approx. 112'-130’10” x 6’9” wall spaces, and able to hold up when enlarged to that scale. Examples of appropriate submissions include completed horizontal paintings, digital compositions, panoramic or digital photographic images/compositions, or illustrations. While submissions need not be exactly proportional to the wall size, they should be able to be cropped or altered to fit the space while retaining artistic integrity and appropriate scale.  Moving images (films, animations, etc.) and performative work will not be considered for this call.

Selected artists will be asked to re-work if/as needed the final compositions for submission of digital files in the appropriate size and resolution. The airport operator will produce “wraps” or vinyl banners, and handle installation of the works.

There is no expressed preference for a particular style of work- artistic excellence and appeal to the airport’s passengers will be the determining criteria for selection.

Work that encompasses the curatorial themes is preferred, but not required. The general curatorial themes of the airport arts inclusion projects are:

-The story of New Jersey and it’s diverse people, places and geographies - rural, suburban and urban; Northern, Central and Southern NJ landscapes and views.

-The state of New Jersey as a year-round destination, with a wide variety of cultural, historic and innovative opportunities for tourists and residents alike

-Looking forward and the future of New Jersey; specifically the themes of Innovation, Diversity, Entertainment and Location as drivers of future progress.

Essentially, we are seeking works from New Jersey artists that highlight the places, landscapes, and geographic diversity that makes our state so vibrant.

For this project in particular, abstract work may also be accepted.

Work will be displayed in highly-public spaces, and as such, work that could be interpreted as political, sexual or violent in nature will not be considered.

Safety & Durability

Artists must consider that the work will be displayed in a public location and the wraps will be produced for display in the terminal. The airport management will replace the wraps when they show wear and tear. Artists must work in a timely fashion with the project coordination team to ensure the final work files provided are the correct file type, of high quality for digital use, and appropriate for public display.
