Foto Forum Santa Fe is pleased to announce an open call for our 2022 Foto Forum Santa Fe Photography Award, an annual international competition open to emerging and established artists. This marks the second year of the Foto Forum Santa Fe Photography Award, and we are proud to be able to increase the cash prize for the winner! The selected photographer receives a $2,500 cash prize, $500 gift certificate to Visions Photo Lab, and two month solo exhibition at our downtown Santa Fe gallery, located a short walk from the art hub surrounding SITE Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Railyard. 2nd Place Award of $500 cash prize, 3 prints in our gallery art rack, and two month online gallery show featured on our website.

The 2021 Foto Forum Santa Fe Photography Award was juried by Harry Gamboa, Jr., and awarded a $1,000 cash prize and two month solo exhibition to Jerry Takigawa, 2nd Place award of $500 cash prize and online gallery show to Lily Colman, and six Honorable Mentions. Jerry Takigawa's exhibition, Balancing Cultures, presented a body of work built on layers of meaning, memory, and family—and with Executive Order 9066, which mandated the incarceration of 120,000 American citizens and legal residents of Japanese ancestry. The beautiful work was on display at Foto Forum gallery from August 6th to September 30th, 2021.

Foto Forum Santa Fe is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that creates an artistic space to explore the current relationship between photography, storytelling, science, and technology through artist exhibitions, workshops, visiting artist lectures, research, and community outreach. The Photography Award expands upon Foto Forum’s commitment to showcasing both contemporary work from established artists and giving opportunities for emerging photographers to find an audience. 

The 2022 Foto Forum Santa Fe Photography Award is accepting entries October 18th, 2021 through March 7th at 12pm MT, 2022, with results announced in mid-April and the show to open June 3rd, 2022. Photographers are invited to submit up to twelve images from a related body of work that is ready for exhibition. This year's Juror, the multimedia artist Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie, will choose the winner based on creativity, cohesion, maturity, and quality of the individual photographs. The selected winner will work with Executive Director Sage Paisner to curate the final exhibition, which may include works not submitted with your application. 

First Place Award receives a $2,500 Cash Prize, two month solo exhibition in our Santa Fe gallery, $500 Gift Certificate to Visions Photo Lab, plus a $500 stipend towards delivering the work to the gallery and having the work returned to the artist. Second Place Award receives $500 Cash Prize, placement of 3 prints in our gallery art print racks, and a two month online gallery show featured on our website.

JUROR
Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie

Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie, born into the Bear Clan of the Taskigi Nation, born for Tsi’naajinii of the Dine’ Nation, adopted into the Eagle House of Metlakatla, adopted in to the Killer Whale Fin House of Klukwan.

Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1954. She was then relocated to the Navajo reservation in 1966. Her artwork shows many of the stereotypes regarding Native Americans in the United States as well as her strong will and pride in her culture. In 1975 she attended the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and in 1978 she studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland where she received her B.F.A. in painting with a minor in photography in 1981. 


Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie is known nationally and internationally as a multimedia artist creating portraiture/social commentary works. In addition to creative works, Tsinhnahjinnie served as a board member or advisor on the following organizations, American Indian Contemporary Arts, Intertribal Friendship House, Gay American Indians, Native American Advisory Committee DeYoung Museum, and is currently serving as Vice President for the Native American Art Studies Association.

Tsinhnahjinnie’s work is held in several collections including, NMAI, MoMA, The Eiteljorg Museum, Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art. Tsinhnahjinnie participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-Residence Program in 1995 and February 1999.

In 2004, Tsinhnahjinnie was appointed Director of the C.N. Gorman Museum and a faculty position within the Native American Studies Department at the University of California Davis.

As an artist, Tsinhnahjinnie, continues to create evocative visual statements that address indigeneity, and continuance.

Portfolio Selection Advice:
The Award is centered around a solo exhibition in the Foto Forum Santa Fe gallery. We suggest you send in twelve photographs that you feel could be part of a cohesive exhibition, rather than trying to show the broad range of different work you make. We are not accepting video submissions at this time, but video can be part of the exhibition. You can submit video stills and describe the video in your Artist Statement. The selected winner will work with Sage Paisner to curate the final exhibition, which may include works not submitted with your application. The Artist Statement is a perfect place to explain how the twelve photographs relate to each other and provide additional information about the body of work and your artistic practice.

 

Application Requirements

All applicants are required to submit a portfolio of 6 to 12 photographic images, a C.V., and an Artist's Statement.
