A New World (open to any medium)

This seventh installment of Women to Watch invites close explorations of self-identifying women artists envisioning a different world.

Given the extraordinary events of 2020 including a global health pandemic, intense calls for social reform, and unprecedented political division, artists conjure and express visions of a new world. Optimistic or discordant, fantastical or believable, artists have always had a hand in visualizing what could be and, in hard times, have often provided hope—or warning.

Visualizations of different worlds can be figurative or abstract and just as there is no single vision for the future, there is no particular media associated with the art created to envision it. Works in Women to Watch 2024 may be in any medium including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, print, drawing, photography, film, digital, installation, and sound.

Between three to five artists will be selected to have their works included in an exhibition at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, June 24 – October 16, 2022.

There is an opportunity to be selected by curators from the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), Washington, DC, for the national Women to Watch Exhibition 2024. Artists accepted to participate in Kemper Museum’s exhibition are not guaranteed participation in NMWA’s exhibition.

Application Requirements

Artists must submit a one-page resume, up to one-page artist statement, up to 10 images of 5–10 works, and an image checklist (including titles, dates, media, and dimensions). Three to five artists will be selected from the submissions. A virtual or live studio visit with each selected artist will determine the actual works for the exhibition.
