The Theme:

New Photographs of Animals

This exhibition seeks to consider how animals are depicted photographically as broadly as possible.  Increased access to new technology and shifting philosophical approaches have greatly expanded how animals are able to be depicted.  Today, images are made using of equipment like telephoto lenses, higher ISOs, drones, and camera traps, but more esoteric imaging technology like radar and lidar allow us to see animals as well as their habitats and migrations in novel ways.  The recent renaissance of use of traditional non-digital materials and mediums has also allow photographers to picture ecological concerns, abstraction, and other ideas in new ways.  We welcome applications that address any of these approaches and more.

JUROR: Todd Forsgren

Todd Forsgren uses photography to examine themes of ecology, perceptions of landscape, and social justice while striving to strike a balance between art history and natural history. To do so, he employs a range of approaches, from documentary strategies to experimental techniques.

Forsgren teaches at Rocky Mountain College where he also serves as the director of the Ryniker-Morrison Gallery.  He is a member of Atlantika Collective, Spectacle Box, and f/4.5 Collectives. Todd lives in Montana and spends lots of time in Los Angeles. Todd studied biology and visual arts at Bowdoin College and  has a MFA in photography from J.E. Purkyne University. He was an artist-in-residence at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, the Artist's Enclave at I-Park, and Maryland Hall for Creative Arts as well as a Fulbright Fellow in Mongolia.

Todd’s photographs have been featured in National Geographic, Slate,  Wired,  The Guardian,  Nature,  New Scientist, and TIME's Lightbox, to name a few. They've been shown at numerous venues including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Noorderlicht Photography Festival, the Academy Art Museum, the Rotterdam Photo Festival, the Indian Photography Festival, Koenig & Clinton, Carroll & Sons, Heiner Contemporary, and Jen Bekman Gallery.
