The South Haven Center for the Arts, in partnership with the South Haven Visitor’s Bureau, the Downtown Development Authority and the City of South Haven, is seeking proposals for sculptural and functional bike racks that are playful and memorable. Bike rack designs must accommodate four to six bicycles. Four designs will be selected for an artist stipend of $2500.

Design, Fabrication and Delivery: This is a design and build project that requires the artist to deliver one uniquely designed and completed commercial-grade, welded metal bike rack for the City to install. Artists may use a fabricator of their choice or fabricate their own sculpture.

Specifications: It is important that the bike racks are functional as well as sculptural/aesthetic in nature. Bike racks must:

·       Accommodate four to six bicycles upright by their frames.

·       Enable the frame and one of the two wheels to be secured using a standard u-lock.

·       Provide locking points that are between 1’ and 3’ above the ground.

·       Intersect with the ground plane securely to ensure that the racks can be mounted firmly to the hardscape.

·       Provide a gap near the bottom for pedal clearance.

·       All designs must be non-abrasive to bike frames.

·       Designs must be safe for pedestrians and cyclists – with no sharp edges or potential safety hazards.

·       Most sizes and shapes of bicycle frames and bike wheels should be able to use the rack (adult and child).

·       Dimensions: Bike racks must have a minimum dimension of 4’ x 3’ (w x h) and may not exceed 8’ x 8’ (w x h).

·       Content: Bike rack designs must be original, and artists much show their ability to execute the design and accomplish the work within the timeline. Also, designs must be appropriate for use in the public domain.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

·       Proposals should be submitted through callforentry.com with the proposed bike racks submitted as jpeg images or as an uploaded .pdf.

·       Artists may submit a maximum of 4 designs. Designs may be hand-drawn or prepared using a computer software program.  Designs must be to scale and must include dimensions including thickness.

·       Artist is asked to submit a resume and 3-5 examples of previous work that illustrates their capability to complete the project.

·       Artist is asked to submit a resume and a short bio- 1000 characters with spaces or less. ·

Once Selected:

·      The artist will receive $2,500 honorarium for the completion of the bike rack. Upon acceptance, the artist will be given $1,500 and a second payment of $1000 when the rack is completed and delivered to the City of South Haven for installation.

·      Sculptural Bike Rack completed and delivered to the City of South Haven public works by May 18, 2022. The artist will coordinate with the city Public Works around the appropriate and secure installation of the sculpture at selected location on the outer edges of the downtown.
