CALL FOR ART: JURIED SHOW

Ever-Present: Birds in Our Daily Lives

October 13 - November 30, 2022

Silverwood Park invites artists who are at least 18 years old to submit work to be considered for a juried exhibition Ever-Present: Birds in Our Daily Lives. Juror: Mike Curran. Deadline: August 15, 2022.

Description of Exhibition

Birds, both wild and domestic, are found across the planet and live in close relationship to humans. They influence society in concrete ways from food and fashion to hobbies and sports. Some species capture our hearts and imaginations while others are considered nuisances or pests. When we stop and notice birds, we may recognize their value and the importance of our relationship with them. We invite artists to submit work that responds to the presence or absence of birds in our daily lives. This exhibition coincides with Three Rivers Park District's Big Year of Birds.

Work can be 2-D or 3-D, representational or abstract. Framed work should not measure more than 40 inches in width. 3-D work must fit on a 15” x 15” pedestal or be freestanding or suspended.

About the Juror

Mike Curran is an arts writer and independent curator living in Minneapolis. The texts and exhibitions he produces are primarily concerned with the precarity that defines contemporary life in the United States, specifically in regards to fraying connections with the natural world and failing cultural and political institutions.

He moved from Portland, Maine, to the Twin Cities to attend Macalester College. His essays and reviews have been published with MnArtists, Public Parking, MPLSART.COM, and TEMP/reviews. Mike's most recent curatorial project was Normal Residential Purposes, a pop-up exhibition space he organized in his backyard. In July 2022, he'll work with Waiting Room to organize Mucking Out, a group exhibition inspired by the act of cleaning up after a flood. And in September 2022, alongside his collaborator Tom Bierlein and through Forecast Public Art's Early-Career Artist Project Grant, he'll organize Area of Concern, a public program centered around the emerald ash borer.
