SNAG’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center during the 2022 SNAG x Providence Conference, June 1-4, 2022. This annual juried exhibition seeks to highlight best of student work in the metals and jewelry field.

Prizes for selected works include:

•Best in Show:  

  • $50 SNAG Conference Trunk Show Gift Certificate OR set of SNAG Jewelry & Metal Survey Books
  • ¼ page ad in Metalsmith

•2 Honorable Mentions: $25 SNAG Conference Trunk Show Gift Certificate OR a SNAG Jewelry & Metal Survey Book

Jury:

This show will be juried with an emphasis on showcasing the diversity of students who are the future of the metalsmithing and jewelry field: in materials, aesthetics, levels of experience and background. The application asks a variety of questions as to how you self-identify so that the jury may select a representative exhibition that is diverse and equitable.

Shipping & Insurance:

Artists are responsible for shipping costs to SNAG and are required to include a pre-paid shipping label for the return work in the shipping box. USPS, FedEx and UPS are all acceptable carriers.

SNAG will insure the work for the wholesale value (50% of the retail price) while in SNAG’s possession. 

Insurance during transit to and from SNAG is the responsibility of the artist. SNAG will provide documentation to support any insurance claims the artist files. 

Application Requirements

Submit one to three works. All work must be accompanied by title, material, dimensions, and year of completion. 

Artists must also submit:

  • Artist statement (250 word maximum)
  • One-page resume
  • Name of institution/program of study and faculty

There is a non-refundable entry fee: $15 for current SNAG student members (use discount code STUDENT22) and $25 for student non-members. There is no additional fee to use the CaFÉ™ online application system.

Eligibility Criteria

Images of up to three pieces of original artwork created between January 2020 and March 2022 may be submitted for consideration. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Artworks included in previous SNAG student exhibitions are not eligible. Students must provide the name(s) of metal faculty teaching at their institution. SNAG membership is not required.  Artists will be responsible for shipping to and from the exhibition.

Student is defined as being enrolled in any educational program including college, university, technical college, community college, non-traditional school, community arts, cultural center or non-profit. Those working through apprenticeship/assistantship paths are also included. 

JURORS:

Dominique Bereiter has had a strong interest in merging form with function. To that end, she spent spent nearly 25 years in a neuroscience laboratory, while also pursuing her passion for art. After several years taking classes and workshops on drawing, ceramics and especially jewelry, she committed to jewelry full-time, opening a studio space in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her passion for jewelry also has led to her to become an avid collector of pieces from Africa, the middle eastern as well as contemporary jewelry from western sources.

Georgina Treviño is a contemporary artist and jeweler from Tijuana, Mexico based in San Diego, California. In 2014 she earned a BA in Applied Design with an Emphasis in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from San Diego State University. Her work has been part of several national and international exhibitions, including Racine Art Museum Schmuck 2015 Munich, Germany, Love Jewels Belgium, 2019. Fotocopy Venice, Italy and LoFi Faces exhibition at MJW2020 Munich, Germany. NYJW ; Amend and In School Suspension. NYJW2021; Dream Machine. Design Fair MADMi Puerto Rico. In 2020 Treviño’s Brooch “Fuck the Police” was acquired by the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC as part of their Permanent Collection. Treviño’s practice has been featured in publications such as L.A. Times, Elle, Vogue, Allure, Marie Claire, The Fader, Paper and PlayBoy magazine. She has worked directly with celebrities like Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, Rosalia, Lizzo, Doja Cat, Kali Uchis, 2Chainz, and Bella Hadid as well as brands like Nike, Fenty & Spotify for custom work inquiries.

James C. Meyer is Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University where he was head of the Metal and Jewelry program. He currently maintains a studio and continues to teach part-time. This includes teaching in the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy as well as conducting workshops at the Penland School of Crafts,  Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and Peters Valley School of Crafts and Touchstone Center for Craft and Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Albany and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Gold and Silversmithing from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz. Professor Meyer’s work has been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. His work is in private and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts – Boston, The Museum of Arts and Design (NYC), the Racine Museum of Art (WI), the Georgia Museum of Art (GA), the Gregg Museum, (NC), and the Nordenjelske Museum of Applied Art (Trondhiem, Norway). He has participated in more than 30 exhibitions in the past 10 years including solo, international , invitational and juried exhibitions Additionally, the work has been acknowledged through grants, fellowships, and publications. He has been a lecturer, author, critic, exhibition curator, conference coordinator, juror and consultant. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, VA, the Society of North American Goldsmiths, the Penland School of Crafts, NC, and Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft, NC.
