Spooky Camp

The tools of humor and fear, when used together, can speak to truth in poignant ways. This will be an exhibit of art that is influenced by that notion. One way to look at this is that some of the best horror movies are not only spooky but also very campy. This is probably because they try so hard to be scary that they become funny. Can visual art strike that same balance between dark subjects and absurdity? You are invited to shine a light on the spooky dark corners of your practice, invite us to your Spooky Camp.

This show will have work influenced by horror films or film noir in some way. Think Evil Dead II or Young Frankenstein or Elvira. It is work that that can be described as uncanny, unsettling, absurd, spooky, campy, playful, and/ or haunting. It will not be work that is overtly scary, gory, hurtful, offensive, or depressing.

Curated by Kendra Larson, Artist and Curator

Shoebox Arts invites you to submit work for this international open call online exhibition at Shoebox Projects, our alternative art space that supports artists through curator opportunities, residencies, representation and exhibitions. This online exhibition runs March 5, 2022 through April 1, 2022

Artwork can be any media (Drawing, Video, Painting, Sculpture, Digital, Intermedia, etc.)  but should address the spooky campy theme somehow.  2D artworks may include screen grabs from moving imagery but will be juried as a static image. If you want the entire moving piece to be viewed, it must be submitted as a video. Work that requires specialized equipment to view will not be considered.
