The goal for this exhibition is to celebrate the beauty, skill, diversity and professionalism of industrial workers through artists’ perspectives, and promote an awareness of our region’s thriving working waterfronts. The event is also a fundraiser to support industrial job training programs and habitat restoration. The first annual Industry & Art exhibition was held September 22-25, 2011. Over 40 artworks by regional artists were featured (see list of artists and awardees below) and over $40K in artwork was sold, with $25K raised for education and the environment. Winning artists received cash awards of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively for first, second and third place. Applications must be submitted using the CaFÉ website (www.callforentry.com). The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 1, 2012, 11:59PM Mountain Daylight Time. BACKGROUND Established in 2005, the Working Waterfront Coalition (WWC) is an organization of businesses concerned about the environmental health and economic vitality of the Portland harbor. WWC is supported with funding from its members. The WWC advocates for sound public policy that promotes environmental, social and economic sustainability and works to promote awareness of place and community benefiting environment and education. More information on last year’s exhibition and the WWC is available at www.industryandart.com. DESCRIPTION OF EXHIBITION SITE: VIGOR INDUSTRIAL The exhibition site at Vigor Industrial is one of their many warehouses on Swan Island and is an integral part of ship repair and barge building. Headquartered in Portland, Vigor Industrial operates a 64-acre facility on Swan Island, and maintains locations in Puget Sound and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company offers ship repair services, barge construction, abrasive blasting and coating services, machine shop services, and industrial space leasing. The company’s roots in Portland were established in 1986 as a small ship repair contractor, operating as Cascade General at the Port of Portland’s Portland Ship Repair Yard. Today, Vigor Industrial’s companies employ over 800 skilled trades people and professionals providing services to a range of public and private customers all over the world. 2012 EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION AND GOALS The goal of the exhibition is to provide the general public and employees of the WWC with an opportunity to connect with and to better understand the various activities of a working waterfront through the lens of artists’ viewpoints and perspectives. The 2012 exhibition will feature artwork that captures and celebrates the people who work in waterfront industries as well as the surrounding natural and industrial settings of their working environments. Submitted artwork should express/interpret the unique connections between workers and the surrounding natural and industrial environments that are forged daily on working waterfronts around the world. Work does not have to be specifically about the working waterfront in Portland, Oregon. Approximately 40 sculptures, paintings, drawings, and short videos will be selected for the exhibition. All selected artwork must be available for sale. Industry & Art is a fundraiser for industrial job training programs and environmental initiatives. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the sale of each artwork as well as all proceeds from donations and activities go to the WWC Scholarship Fund at Portland Community College Foundation and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District.
