CALL DESCRIPTION:

A juried Ceramic Group Show with Grand Prize for two artists: a Show at Atlantic Gallery in NYC’s Chelsea art district.

“GeoLogic” is the theme for this exhibition of clay-based work at Atlantic Gallery in New York’s bustling Chelsea district. Selected works will explore aesthetic, narrative, political, structural, or personal points of view related to the exhibition title. Potters and sculptors whose work explores issues regarding Geology, Geometry, Geography, Geohumanism, Geomorphology, and/or all things Earth-related are strongly encouraged to apply. Visual artists who express ideas through functional or sculptural modes are invited to submit work. Works intended for the wall, ie; tilework, mosaics, and installations are also encouraged. Multimedia works which are at least 80% ceramic are welcomed. The juror, Bruce Dehnert, will award two artists a grand prize of a week-long show at Atlantic Gallery. A printed full-color catalog will be provided to each accepted artist. Curated by Bruce Dehnert and Joan Walton.

JUROR: Bruce Dehnert

Bruce Dehnert received a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana and a MFA in Ceramics from Alfred University. He has taught at Hunter College and Parsons School of Art and Design, The School of Art [New Zealand], the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak [Malaysia], and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He has taught workshops in India, China, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA.

Dehnert was the recipient of a New Jersey Artist Fellowship Award, and other awards including three Fletcher Challenge International Ceramics Awards, the Settlor Prize in Sculpture, and a Carnegie Premier Award for Works on Paper. A finalist in the Robert Wood Johnson International Figurative Competition, his work is held in many collections including The Crocker Museum [California], the Liling Museum of Ceramic Art [China], The New Dowse Museum [New Zealand] and The White House [Washington, DC]. He is a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics [IAC]. He recently presented a solo exhibition, “Architectonic,” at The Hunterdon Art Museum. Dehnert has been Head of Ceramics at Peters Valley School for Craft for the past 22 years

A writer, Dehnert has published in numerous journals including Metalsmith Magazine, Studio Potter, Ceramics Monthly, and Ceramics: Art and Perception. His best-selling book, “Simon Leach’s Pottery Handbook,” was published by Abrams Publishing of New York.

Joan Walton, co-curator, is an artist member of Atlantic Gallery. She graduated with honors from Pratt Institute with a BFA in photography in 1969 and began to work with clay in 1998 after an extensive career as an art director and photo editor in the publishing field. She studied ceramics at the Parsons School of Design, the 92nd Street Y and in many workshops as a continuing education student. After some years as a potter, hand-building sculpture in clay became her primary focus. Her ceramic work has been widely exhibited in the United States and as a visiting artist in China and Korea. She taught at the Greenwich House Pottery in New York from 2008 – 2013.

TIMELINE FOR THE EXHIBITION

May 11-13, 2022: Artist Notifications for accepted and non-accepted artists
June 8 –17, 2022: Works delivered to the gallery
June 21 – July 9, 2022: GeoLogic Juried Show
June 23, 2022: Exhibition Reception (Due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19 change to the opening reception is TBD)
July 9 & 12, 2022: Hand-delivered work picked up/ Artwork gets shipped back this week

Application Requirements

CATEGORIES:
Works must be primarily ceramic. The use of additional media is permitted, including but not limited to: oils, acrylics, wood, metal, plaster, etc. up to 20% of each work.

ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS:
Please be prepared to submit the following when applying: Name, Title of work, Year completed, Type of clay (and other materials) and firing method, Size in inches (H x W x D), Retail price.

Open to all US artists 18 years or older.

Hanging work, including any frame, may not exceed 48 inches in width and height. All hanging work must be wired or otherwise prepared and ready for hanging. Work that is not ready for installation will not be displayed.
Standing Sculptures: maximum dimensions of sculpture must be no more than 48 inches in any dimension and must be firmly stable.
ALL PEDESTAL WORK MUST FIT ON A 19″ SQUARE PEDESTAL OR ARTISTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN APPROPRIATE STAND. We also have two lower pedestals of 21”x18” and 20”x 24” that can be used if needed.

ENTRY FEE:
The fee is $35 for 3 works.
$5 for each additional work, up to 5 works total. Entry fees are non-refundable.

Atlantic Gallery will take a 30% commission on any work sold. All works must be for sale.

FOR SHIPPING:

  • Packages need to be Delivered: June 8 – 17, 2022
  • Please be sure to tell preferred carrier service that packages need to arrive during our business hours: Tuesday – Saturday; 12:00pm – 6:00pm.
  • Please include (AND email ahead) DETAILED instructions for unpacking and re-packing work, as well as any specific installation instructions.
  • Work should be shipped in the smallest reusable container that will safely transport the piece.
  • Please DO NOT use packing peanuts.
  • A computer-generated return label for return of work MUST be enclosed in an envelope taped to the back of your artwork or email label to atlanticgalleryinfo@gmail.com. NO EXCEPTIONS. Pre-paid shipping arrangements must be made through UPS or FedEx websites or with other shippers who will pick up work at the gallery. No U.S. Postal Service Or COD returns. DO NOT send check, stamps, or credit card information for return of work.
  • If you are shipping via UPS please be sure to pay for pickup of your piece. It is a separate fee when you purchase your return label.
  • The gallery will do its best to repack work in shipped packaging, but responsibility for providing adequate packaging and instructions rests with the artist.

 

FOR HAND DELIVERY:

  • Hand Delivered: June 8 – 17, 2022; Tuesday through Saturday; 12pm-6pm
  • Please wrap artwork in bubble wrap if you choose not to package it in a box.
  • Hand-delivered packaging must be removed from the gallery upon delivery. Floor stands must be brought with sculpture unless arrangements are made to use a gallery stand. Gallery stands are 19”x19”.
  • Hand-delivered work must be picked up on July 9, 5pm-7pm or July 12, 2022 12pm-6pm.
