Background

Addison is located in the DFW Metroplex and covers a 4.35 square mile area just north of Dallas, TX.   Although Addison has a population of only 15,800 residents, its business and daytime population typically reaches up to 100,000 a day. Despite its small size, the town is well-known for several events such as Kaboom Town (July 3rd), Oktoberfest and Taste of Addison. 

Addison is also well known for its public art collection most of which has been facilitated by the Addison Arbor Foundation (AAF).   AAF is completing its twentieth public art installation.  The Town's public collection which includes restored works by nationally recognized artists Fletcher Benton and Mac Whitney as well as commissioned pieces by Texas Artists Mel Chin Nic Noblique, Jim Eppler, Eric McGehearty, Eliseo and David B. Process

The call for art will be conducted in three rounds, proposals for round one are currently being sought.  A selection committee will identify a shortlist of artists / artist teams to participate in round two of the process.  Participants that move to round two will be provided a $1500 stipend to further develop their concept, create a 3-D model, detailed opinion of probable cost and make a presentation to the selection committee. Participants selected to continue to round three will make a formal presentation to the Addison City Council.  

Location

A location for the installation has not been identified.  However, Addison is conducting studies for a transit oriented development adjacent to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) silver line in the Addison Circle District and a facilities utilization study, either of which may include space for the proposed installation.  

Schedule

January 27 - March 18, 2022 Round one entries may be submitted.

March 11 - April 29, 2022 Round one entries reviewed by Selection Committee.

April 29 - May 6, 2022 Round two shortlisted artists notified.  

June 6, 2022 Round two submission deadline

June 20 -24, 2022 Round two presentations made to selection committee.  

July 11 - 15, 2022 Round three selected artists notified.

August 22, 2022 Round three presentations provided to staff for review.

September 13 & 27, 2022 Artist Presentation to Addison City Council.

Application Requirements

Requirements
This call is for round one proposal submissions Ito be considered please provide the following information:

  • CV for the artist or artist teams that includes representatives projects with the following information:
    • Size, materials used and location installed.
    • Date completed.
    • Budget.
    • Project reference contact information.
  • Include a letter of interest with a written description of the artist's / artist team's vision for the project.
  • Representative work - Provide a minimum of 5 and no more than 9 images which represent the artist / artist teams relevant work.
  • Include 1 image which illustrates the artist's / artist team's concept for the project. Include Concept in the title of this image so the jury may distinguish between work samples and the concept.

Compile CV and Letter of interest into one document and upload to the entry.

Include representative work and the concept image in the image uploads.

Proposals must identify how they represent the following components:

  • A sculpture or landmark that recognizes the service and sacrifice of Addison Fire and Police Departments, service to the community and the importance of public safety.
  • Honor and pay tribute to fallen heroes, past and future, who have lost their life while serving the community.
  • Convey a message of remembrance, sacrifice and duty.
  • Embrace and portray the values, quality and vision up which Addison was been built.
  • Be constructed from durable low maintenance materials that have a proven record for sustaining the harsh outdoor Texas climate.

 A budget has not been formally established for the project the City Council and selection committee anticipates a project of this scale and magnitude could be in the $100,000 - $150,000 range which would be inclusive of all artist fees and associated expenses such as design, fabrication, lighting, insurance, transportation and installation. Sitework would be in addition to the artwork costs.  A specific project budget will be set once an artist and concept has been selected and will be based on the quality, scale, materials and scope of the proposed artwork.

Eligibility Criteria

Open to all US based artist, 18 years or older, that have a minimum of 5 years experience completing projects of a similar scale and budget.
