Laemmle is seeking artwork to be located at the Newhall theatre location in Santa Clarita, California. The company intends to select one artist to design and fabricate an original, site-specific artwork to be located on the side of Laemmle Theatre adjacent to Railroad Avenue.

Laemmle will select semi-finalists to create and present a formal proposal (stipend of a $1,000). Artist(s) are invited to submit portfolios of past work for consideration and provide an all-inclusive budget for this project.

For the overall project's budget, invited semi-finalists will be asked to submit their proposed figures for completing the work.  The final mural will be up for three-year minimum in mural contracts with the artist. After three years, Laemmie will evaluate the artwork to ensure the original design is within maintenance standards.

 DESIGN GUIDELINES:

  • The concept of the art piece would reflect the brand of Laemmle Theatres, movies, and the Newhall area. The concept of the proposal will be discussed with the semi-finalist.
  • Creativity and innovation of design are encouraged.
  • The artwork must be an original design.
  • Artwork must be suitable for viewing by all ages.
  • Artwork may not be used for advertisement or to promote business, product, or viewpoint.
  • Designs must not include any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, business names, corporate or organizational branding, or images of drugs.
  • Artwork can be of any medium, but artist should consider structural and surface soundness and materials that can withstand outside and uncovered weather conditions as well as inherent resistance to theft, vandalism, and excessive maintenance and repair costs. Artists will be required to outline in their proposal the suggested maintenance schedule.

PROJECT GUIDELINES:

  • The selected artwork will have two locations on the east side of the building, the southern mural space to be 38’ wide by 20’ in height, and the northern mural space to be 41’ wide by 20’ in height.
  • The murals will start 10’8” above the sidewalk. The Artist will provide the scaffolding needed to reach 30’8”.
  • The exterior finish is stucco, mural paint is to be satin finish (will not accept glossy).
  • Power for the artwork itself is not available onsite, as there will be no electricity to the artwork. The walkway will have natural light, as the artwork will be outside.
  • Artwork must be constructed of durable materials that are able to withstand the harsh weather conditions of the desert (high winds and extreme temperatures).
  • Artwork must comply with standard engineering practices and requirements.
  • Artwork will be evaluated to require that it does not present a hazard to public safety, and must conform to ADA standards.
  • Delivered artwork that differs significantly from the artwork represented will be disqualified.
