DESCRIPTION:

The City of Coral Springs is requesting artist concept proposals for a commissioned interactive public artwork of significant size for Pride Promoters Park on Riverside Drive and NW 44th Court. Proposals by both single and/or teams of artists will be accepted.

PUBLIC ART PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The City of Coral Springs Public Art Committee will commission an artist for an interactive sculpture at the Coral Springs Pride Promoters Park, a city facility that provides a neighborhood playground and recreation for residents.

This artwork should be significant in size and able to stand on its own without support from any nearby structures. The artwork must have interactive aspects that involve the spectator, promotes accessibility through art, and can engage multiple individuals at a time as a way of encouraging connectedness and a sense of community. This sculpture will provide a variety of opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in and provide healing and social cohesion. The artwork should have a dramatic visual aspect to it.

QUALITIES OF ARTWORK

An interactive sculpture is a sculpture that encourages the observer(s) to “walk” through, on, or around the artwork and become part of the artwork itself. Sculptures, installations, art walls, and other types of artworks are acceptable as long as the artwork is permanent, structurally sound, and suitable for outdoor installation.

The artwork should be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance. South Florida has a sub-tropical climate and is hot and humid with an intense sun and seasonal heavy rains. Problems with rust and fading should be avoided. Resistance to high-speed winds is required. The artwork must be self-supporting on an open landscape or hardscape and be large in scale. Artwork should meet the Florida Building Code and Hurricane Resistant Requirements. Materials used in the artwork must be able to withstand the weather and air conditions of South Florida including high humidity, exposure to long periods of sunlight, high temperatures, tree debris such as leaves and seeds, heavy wind and rains, and salt exposure.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION

The artwork will be located in Pride Promoters Park, which is a neighborhood park on Riverside Drive and NW 44th Court. The park is surrounded by multifamily and single family residences. It contains basketball courts, a pavilion with picnic tables, and a playground. The City will be completing upgrades to the basketball courts and playground to enhance accessibility features over the next year, which will compliment any art piece that will be located on site. It has beautiful tree coverage and is widely utilized by the surrounding community. Riverside Drive is an arterial road which has a considerable amount of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. There is a county bus stop located adjacent to the park on Riverside Drive.  For more information on Pride Promotes Park, visit: https://www.coralsprings.gov/Parks-Directory/Pride-Promoters-Park
