PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The SSPAC requests proposals for permanent artwork to be placed in the interior lobby of South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s (SSPRD) future Recreation Complex that is anticipated to open December 2020. The Recreation Complex will be located south of County Line Road and west of Holly Street, just east of David A. Lorenz Regional Park (see attached location map). The physical address is 4810 S. County Line Road, Littleton, CO 80126.
The Recreation Complex will include a fieldhouse with two indoor synthetic turf fields and two gymnasiums, an ice arena with three sheets of ice, a restaurant, and the district administration offices with a board room that is available for event rental. The artwork will be installed in the main interior lobby of the building on the north wall across from the center point of control and all building visitors will walk past the artwork (see attached facility plan, elevations, and renderings).
PROJECT SITE
The display space for the artwork is on the north lobby wall across from the main entry/control desk (see facility plan and elevations). The size of the area available for display is approximately 16 feet tall by 69 feet long (between the wainscoting and the ductwork), the artwork must work around all doorways. There is additional room to wrap around the west wall facing the entry, this wall space is approximately 8 feet tall by 18 feet long (see attached lobby elevations and section). These stud walls can support a maximum of 40 pounds per square foot.
Lighting is provided on the wall(s) specifically for the artwork.
PROJECT CRITERIA
The proposed art must be:
1) contemporary, bold, colorful, eye-catching, while complementing the interior aesthetics of the building;
2) a single piece or series of elements;
3) durable, stable, non-hazardous, and maintainable;
4) a painting, sculpture or other media hung or attached to the wall (s);
5) low maintenance and the selected artist to provide a suggested maintenance plan for the art
Submissions may include existing artist-owned work, if appropriate, for the site. SSPRD will provide reasonable care with regard to security and maintenance. The artwork’s dimensions and design are to be at the artist’s discretion. It is recommended that artists review the plans, elevations and renderings prior to submitting a proposal to fully understand the scope of the project.
BUDGET
Up to $60,000 is available for all expenses related to this commission including artist fees, materials, fabrication, finishes, structural engineering, insurance, shipping, travel, coordination with architect, installation, documentation, and all other associated expenses. The final artist selected must provide a Certificate of Insurance that will be in effect during delivery and installation. It is possible SSPRD staff could assist the artist with the physical installation, but this will need to be discussed and negotiated with the artist and will depend on the extent to which SSPRD has the necessary capabilities. SSPRD reserves the right to request that the artist, at no additional cost to SSPRD, submit installation plans stamped by a Colorado licensed engineer.
ELIGIBILITY
This project is open to all artists in Colorado and its seven surrounding states (Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and Nebraska) who have the background, experience and reputation for completing such a project. Original commissioned or artist-owned work, if appropriate, will be considered. The selected artwork may not be duplicated within 500 miles of the site.
SELECTION PROCESS
Artwork will be selected by the South Suburban Public Art Committee, a group of citizen volunteers with diverse interests in public art appointed by the Board of Directors, and the project architect. Three non-voting SSPRD employees act as advisors to the Committee. Final approval is by the SSPRD Board of Directors.
Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Strong visual presence and interactive components
- Clarity and creativity of approach
- Appropriateness of the proposed artwork to the building
- Appropriateness of the scale of the artwork to the display area
- Aesthetic quality
- Maintenance requirements
- Materials, construction and durability
- Public safety
- Ability of the artist to work effectively in a collaborative setting
- References from artist’s clients
- Probability of successful completion of the project as determined by the SSPAC
FINALISTS
Finalists will be chosen to present design concepts that best convey their ideas. Finalists will be asked to present their ideas to the committee during an interview process and will be paid a $300 proposal fee once SSPRD has received a W9 from the artist. In order to evaluate final concepts properly, the artist shall present color rendering(s) and/or a simple maquette. A detail budget breakdown for the project is required. The selected artist will enter into a contract and submit an invoice (s) to SSPRD, which includes a 1/3-1/3-1/3 payment plan for the anticipated schedule of the project.
