Exhibition Prospectus – Summer, 2019 at The VETS Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island

Call for Entry - “Narrative and Illusion” - An Open Juried National Exhibition

Art League Rhode Island / The VETS Gallery, One Avenue of the Arts, Providence, RI 02903

 Call Listing URL:

Narrative art is that which tells a story. This can be achieved either by depicting multiple frames, collaging vignettes into a massive odyssey composition, or illustrating an explicitly active moment from a longer story. Examples of these (and many other) cinematic methods can be seen throughout art history in any number of ancient Chinese scrollwork, Renaissance martyrdom paintings, French Romantics, and American work anything from George Bellows to Marvel Comics to Kara Walker. Artists and Filmmakers alike rely on the viewer’s suspension of disbelief in order effectively tell their story, to get their message across. In all manner of styles, artists and filmmakers build worlds just believable enough for viewers to enter. Appreciation of painting, theater and film all rely on viewers’ faith in the illusion. In conjunction with Flickers, Art League Rhode Island will present “Narrative and Illusion” to coincide with the Rhode Island International Film Festival and seeks 2D and 3D fine artworks that illustrate similarities in art and film, by narrative storytelling, world building, and other tropes founded on illusion and escapism.

Juror: A panel of Rhode Island International Film Festival and Art League Rhode Island organizers.

Art League Rhode Island (ALRI) has a 19-year history of supporting artists and the arts. The organization was incorporated with a goal to contribute, encourage and promote integrity and excellence in the arts in Rhode Island. ALRI numbers among its founding members some of Rhode Island's most prominent artists working in a wide range of media from painting to furniture making.  Its mission is to provide a venue for the growth and encouragement of artists, to promote high standards in the visual arts, and to encourage community participation and appreciation of the greater Rhode Island arts community.

The membership is deeply committed to the value of visual art in contemporary life and embraces current approaches to curatorial programming, community-building, art education, and outreach to under-served communities.  As an all-volunteer organization, ALRI represents over 100 Artist Members, hailing from 32 of the 39 cities and towns throughout the state.

ALRI is honored to be one of five resident arts companies in The Veterans Memorial Auditorium (The VETS) complex. The VETS Gallery is part of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium complex, a state of the art performance facility, accordingly many visitors view the Gallery’s juried and invitational visual art exhibitions. Adjacent to some of Providence's best shopping areas, restaurants and hotels, the Gallery, which is managed by ALRI, is close to the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University.
