COVID-19 Update, as of April 11, 2020

"Works on Paper" 2020 is the 22nd Annual National Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Works on Paper can include but is not limited to Drawing, Painting on Paper, hand pulled Prints, Photographic Prints, Digital Works on Paper, and Paper constructions that can be wall hung. A catalog of selected artwork is planned.

We will keep you updated if there is any Covid-19 related impact to the LBIF as we reach the end of April.  In light of the current uncertainty of Covid-19 and health concerns, at this time there are no plans to cancel the Works on Paper exhibit. The online process has allowed us to continue accepting submissions. If this exhibition must be cancelled by the LBIF due to the Corona virus /Covid-19  after the Juror has made her selection, application fees will be refunded only to those artists who were selected by the Juror to participate in this exhibition.

The Juror for 2020 is Sarah Suzuki, Curator of Drawings and Prints at MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.

Submission deadline May 29. The online process has allowed us to continue with accepting art. Works on Paper will still be juried and three cash prizes and three honorable mentions will be awarded by the Juror at the opening reception. Artists do not have to be present to receive their awards. In light of the current uncertainty of Covid-19 and health concerns, at this time there are no plans to switch to an online format and the gallery exhibition is still planned. The competition and exhibition is open to emerging as well as established artists working in the continental US.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
The 22nd annual exhibition, National Juried Competition "Works on Paper" 2020 at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences welcomes entries of original work, created within the last two years, which explore the varied media which utilize Paper.  The Competition and Exhibition is open to artists in continental USA only. Works on Paper can include, but are not limited to: drawing, painting on paper, hand-pulled prints, photographic prints, digitally created artwork displayed as prints, and paper constructions which may be wall hung.


AWARDS:
Cash Awards will be announced at the reception $500 first prize, $250 second prize, $100 third prize; and three honorable mentions. Other awards to be announced. We are planning an exhibition brochure/catalog with each of the selected artists' artwork to be included.

SPECIFICATIONS:
Artists 18 years and older, residing in the continental USA, are eligible. 
Works on Paper can include, but are not limited to: drawing, painting on paper, hand-pulled prints, photography, digitally created artwork displayed as prints, photographic prints, and paper construction that are wall hung. Entries must have been created within the last two years and not been previously shown at LBIF.
 
Two dimensional works should not exceed 60 inches in width and 60 inches in height, and not exceed 10 lbs.  Work may not project in the third dimension beyond 18 inches. However, larger size work is encouraged and allowed but the artist must provide return prepaid postage or pre-paid return shipping label for work and packaging that is over 10 lbs and/or larger than 60 inches by 60 inches. Please do not submit work that has a retail value over $10,000.
 
Submitted work must be available for the duration of the exhibition. ALL WORKS MUST BE FOR SALE. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences will retain a 40% commission of the purchase price on all works sold during the exhibition. If any artwork is commissioned from this exhibition, the LBIF will retain 40% of the commissioned price.
 
Work submitted must be suitably framed, firmly wired, prepared for hanging, and professionally presented. No sawtooth hangers; no sandwich frames. It is advised that all paper should be displayed framed and protected under acrylic (Plexiglas). Artwork that is to be pinned or attached to wall using tacks, amgnets, etc, without a frame or protection are acceptable however we can not be responsible to possible damage to the surface. 3-D work will be considered, but should be wall mounted, or able to be displayed on a 10” deep wall mounted shelf. Please do not submit three dimensional works in the round that require pedestals.
 
Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to exclude from the exhibition any works that do not arrive in sturdy condition, or are deemed too fragile to be successfully exhibited. Work that has not been suitably prepared will be hung at LBIF's discretion.
Please only submit work that will be available at the time of the exhibition and will remain for its entirety. No accepted entry may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition. No pricing changes will be allowed after acceptance. Work that is copied or done under the guidance of an instructor is not eligible. Entries must not have been previously exhibited at LBIF. If the work does not fully reflect what is represented in the submitted images, Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to exclude it from the exhibition.

Please note: Artists are not required to attend the reception. Artists who receive an award and do not in attend the reception will receive their check by mail.

    If selected, the submitted image and description will be used in the catalog and no changes or edits are allowed by the artist.

    SPECIAL INSTRUCTION:
    We suggest - for the Juror's convenience - that on the CAFE application after the TITLE of your WORK on your application, you state the medium you are submitting, such as "STILL LIFE - DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY" or "STILL LIFE - CHARCOAL DRAWING ON  PAPER". Because of the wide range of materials that are allowed, this information will quickly inform the Juror when viewing each of the submitted images. 
     
    ARTIST STATEMENT:  Please include in your application a one page Artist Statement. A one to two page Resume is optional but encouraged.

    DELIVERY of accepted artwork:  Shipping/Delivery instructions will accompany email notification of acceptance. Shipping to LBIF is the responsibility of the artist. Return shipping via UPS for accepted artworks will be provided by the LBIF, for work that complied with the stated dimensions and weight and with a pre-printed Return Label.  Any larger submissions or packages that weigh more than 10 lbs. must be sent with a pre-paid return shipping label or shippers’ UPS or FEDEX account number to charge to artists’ account.  
     
    LIABILITY: 
    Works will be insured for the duration of the exhibition from time of arrival at the LBIF until return shipment to the extent of 60% of the artist’s stated retail value.

    About the Juror

    The Juror for 2020 is Sarah Suzuki, Curator of Drawings and Prints at MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

    Sarah Suzuki is Curator of Drawings and Prints at the Museum of Modern Art. Ms. Suzuki was appointed Director, Opening of the new Museum, at The Museum of Modern Art in 2018. In this role, she oversaw the planning and implementation of all aspects of the Museum’s renovation and expansion project. Serving as a senior liaison and project manager for the Museum director and senior staff, she worked across all departments, making decisions with the director, chief curators, and other leadership staff regarding MoMA’s reopening exhibition program, marketing and communications strategies, audience and visitor experience, and physical plant. Ms. Suzuki continues to serve as Curator in The Department of Drawings and Prints, a position to which she was appointed in 2016, having joined the institution as a research assistant in 1998.  At MoMA, her exhibitions include Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams (2018-19); A Revolutionary Impulse: The Rise of the Russian Avant-Garde (2016–17); Soldier, Spectre, Shaman: The Figure and the Second World War (2015-16); Scenes for a New Heritage: Contemporary Art from the Collection (2015-16); Jean Dubuffet: Soul of the Underground (2014-15); The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec: Prints and Posters (2014-15), as well as solo exhibitions of Meiro Koizumi (2013); Yin Xiuzhen (2010); Song Dong (2009); and Gert and Uwe Tobias (2008). Suzuki has also ushered in numerous important acquisitions, is a founding member of the C-MAP (Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives) Asia research group, and the lead curatorial liaison for the Museum’s SPRZNY collaboration with UNIQLO.

    ABOUT THE LBIF:
    The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences (LBIF) was established in 1948 as a non-profit institution by artist Boris Blai to provide arts and educational opportunities to the surrounding communities.  Blai, a sculptor and founding Dean of Tyler School of Art, Temple University, had a vision that through exceptional art exhibitions, classes, and cultural activities the LBIF could provide visitors an opportunity to experience and share quality arts and cultural programming.  For more than sixty-nine years the LBIF has delivered this mission through its Exhibition programs, Visiting Artists programs, Artist Residency and Retreat Program.

    LEGAL AGREEMENT:

    Submission to NJC 2020: Works on Paper constitutes an agreement with all conditions of this show. The artist allows the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences the right to photograph accepted work for publicity purposes, use artist's name and bio, and images of artist and their work for publicity purposes in print, on the web and digitally. Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to reject any work not resembling the submitted entry or work that is not ready to be shown according to the aforementioned specifications.
