About our Exhibition Juror:
Matthew Hargraves PhD
Chief Curator, Yale Center for British Art

Matthew Hargraves PhD, is a curator, art historian, and educator who specializes in the history of British art, and in particular the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. He is the author of a variety of publications, including Candidates for Fame: The Society of Artists of Great Britain (2006); Great British Watercolors from the Paul Mellon Collection at the Yale Center for British Art (2007); Varieties of Romantic Experience: British, Danish, Dutch, French, and German Drawings from the Collection of Charles Ryskamp (2010); and A Dialogue with Nature: Romantic Landscapes from Britain and Germany (2014). He has worked at the Yale Center for British Art since 2005.

At the Center, Dr. Hargraves has organized exhibitions including Varieties of Romantic Experience, an exhibition of more than 200 northern European drawings of the Romantic period from the outstanding collection of the late Professor Charles Ryskamp, Director Emeritus of The Morgan Library & Museum and Frick Collection in New York, in 2010. This exhibition treated British drawings as part of the international phenomenon that was Romanticism to show the cosmopolitanism of draftsmanship during the period. He also curated Connections, an exhibition of treasures from the Center’s collections, in 2011, which celebrated the launch of the collections online, a project he oversaw as Head of the Department of Collections Information and Access.

In collaboration with Scott Wilcox, Deputy Director for Collections, Dr. Hargraves led a team of curators in the complete reinstallation of the Center’s galleries completed in 2016. Entitled Britain in the World, it features more than 500 objects from across the Center’s collections, and galleries puts British art in a global context, tracing the relationship between art and Britain’s imperial ambitions from the sixteenth century to the present. Emphasizing the range and depth of British art, the reinstallation reveals how the story of art in Britain was shaped by artists from across the globe, and how it was constantly being reinvented in response to Britain’s changing fortunes.

In addition to his work at the Yale Center for British Art, Dr. Hargraves also lectures in the Department of History of Art at Yale, home to the oldest dedicated Art Department at any university in the United States.

Dr. Hargraves earned his BA from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, and both his MA in 2000 and PhD in 2003 from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, all in the history of art. We are thrilled to welcome a curator, art historian, and educator of his caliber to the Providence Art Club!
