"Works on Paper" 2021 is the 23nd Annual National Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Works on Paper can include but is not limited to Drawing, Painting on Paper, hand pulled Prints, Photographic Prints, Digital Works on Paper, and Paper constructions that can be wall hung. The Juror will select 70 artworks to be on display in our spacious Gallery.

The Juror for 2022 is Lanka Tattersall, Curator, MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.

ABOUT THE JUROR:

Esther Adler, Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at MoMA.

Prior to 2019, Tattersall was associate curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, where she organized the exhibitions Cameron Rowland: D37 (2018), Real Worlds: Brassaï, Arbus, Goldin (2018), Lauren Halsey: we still here, there (2018), and Hito Steyerl: Factory of the Sun (2016), among others, and initiated the forthcoming survey of the work of Tala Madani. She spearheaded a number of important commissions and performances, including works by Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Rafa Esparza, Juliana Huxtable, and Patrick Staff. Tattersall also oversaw MOCA’s Emerging Art Fund acquisition group.

From 2010 to 2014, Tattersall was a curatorial assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, where she was an integral part of the curatorial and editorial teams for the touring retrospective and accompanying monograph Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963–2010.

Tattersall received a BA in the history of art and architecture from Wesleyan University; an MA in modern art and curatorial studies from Columbia University; and an AM in the history of art and architecture, modern art from Harvard University and currently a PhD candidate in the history of art and architecture, modern art at Harvard University.

Ms Tattersall’s responsibilities include participating in the Museum’s acquisitions program, the installation of the collection galleries, and the development of special exhibitions and catalogues.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

The 23nd annual exhibition, National Juried Competition "Works on Paper" 2021 at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences welcomes entries of original work, created within the last two years, which explore the varied media which utilize Paper.  The Competition and Exhibition is open to artists in continental USA only. Works on Paper can include, but are not limited to: drawing, painting on paper, hand-pulled prints, photographic prints, digitally created artwork displayed as prints, and paper constructions which may be wall hung.

Three cash Prizes and three Honorable Mentions will be awarded by the Juror, Lanka Tattersall. Artists do not have to be present to receive their awards. The competition and exhibition is open to emerging as well as established artists working in the continental US.
A printed catalog of selected artwork is planned to accompany the Gallery exhibition.


SPECIFICATIONS:
Artists 18 years and older, residing in the continental USA, are eligible. 
Works on Paper can include, but are not limited to: drawing, painting on paper, hand-pulled prints, photography, digitally created artwork displayed as prints, photographic prints, and paper construction that are wall hung. Entries must have been created within the last two years and not been previously shown at LBIF.
 
Two dimensional works should not exceed 60 inches in width and 60 inches in height, and not exceed 10 lbs.  Work may not project in the third dimension beyond 18 inches. However, larger size work is encouraged and allowed and the artist must provide return prepaid postage or pre-paid return shipping label for work and packaging that is over 10 lbs and/or larger than 36 inches by 36 inches. Please do not submit work that has a retail value over $7,500.
 
Submitted work must be available for the duration of the exhibition. ALL WORKS MUST BE FOR SALE. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences will retain a 40% commission of the purchase price on all works sold during the exhibition. If any artwork is commissioned from this exhibition, the LBIF will retain 40% of the commissioned price.
 
Work submitted must be suitably framed, firmly wired, prepared for hanging, and professionally presented. No sawtooth hangers; no sandwich frames. All paper must be displayed framed and protected under acrylic (Plexiglas). 3-D work will be considered, but should be wall mounted, or able to be displayed on a 10” deep wall mounted shelf. Please do not submit three dimensional works in the round that require pedestals. Large work is encouraged.
 
Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to exclude from the exhibition any works that do not arrive in sturdy condition, or are deemed too fragile to be successfully exhibited. Work that has not been suitably prepared will be hung at LBIF's discretion.
Please only submit work that will be available at the time of the exhibition and will remain for its entirety. No accepted entry may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition. No pricing changes will be allowed after acceptance. Work that is copied or done under the guidance of an instructor is not eligible. Entries must not have been previously exhibited at LBIF. If the work does not fully reflect what is represented in the submitted images, Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to exclude it from the exhibition.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTION about submitted images:
We suggest - for the Juror's convenience - that on the CAFE application after the TITLE of your WORK on your application, you state the medium you are submitting, such as "STILL LIFE - DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY" or "STILL LIFE – CHARCOAL DRAWING ON  PAPER". Because of the wide range of materials that are allowed, this information will quickly inform the Juror when viewing each of the submitted images.

DELIVERY of accepted artwork:  Shipping/Delivery instructions will accompany email notification of acceptance. Shipping to LBIF is the responsibility of the artist. Return shipping via UPS for accepted artworks will be provided by the LBIF, for work that complied with the stated dimensions and weight and with a pre-printed Return Label.  Any larger submissions or packages that weigh more than 10 lbs. must be sent with a pre-paid return shipping label or shippers’ UPS or FEDEX account number to charge to artists’ account.
 
LIABILITY: 
Works will be insured for the duration of the exhibition from time of arrival at the LBIF until return shipment to the extent of 60% of the artist’s stated retail value. Artists are encouraged to have their own insurance.

ABOUT THE LBIF:
The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences (LBIF) was established in 1948 as a non-profit institution by artist Boris Blai to provide arts and educational opportunities to the surrounding communities.  Blai, a sculptor and founding Dean of Tyler School of Art, Temple University, had a vision that through exceptional art exhibitions, classes, and cultural activities the LBIF could provide visitors an opportunity to experience and share quality arts and cultural programming.  For more than sixty-nine years the LBIF has delivered this mission through its Exhibition programs, Visiting Artists programs, Artist Residency and Retreat Program.
