The Vision

The Department of Campus Activities at Western Carolina University is seeking an artist to create a feature wall in their newest office space. Ideally, the artist would come from the Appalachian Region and would utilize locally and renewably sourced materials to create a mountain-scape that reflects the beautiful and unique context that the University calls home. We are seeking a mixed-medium installation made up of metals, glass, stone, wood, etc. that would ideally be sourced through recycling or renewable sources.

Technical Aspects

The maximum space available is 11 ft. 6 in. feet wide by 7 ft. 9 in. tall. The wall that will hold this installation is curved (see floorplan), so artist should consider this in their proposal. The wall is constructed of drywall with metal studs every 16 inches (see attachments for more information), each stud can hold 2 anchors, with each anchor allowing 25lbs. The maximum depth of the artwork cannot exceed 4 inches at any point.

Considerations

The Artist will be installing this piece under the supervision of Western Carolina University’s Facilities Management Team to ensure adherence to campus safety and construction/installation standards.

If the Artist is planning to utilize colors, we encourage them to consult WCU’s brand identity and color standards to ensure adherence and cohesion. More information about WCU’s visual identity can be found here - https://www.wcu.edu/discover/communications-and-marketing/wcu-brand/visual-identity/index.aspx

We would anticipate collaborating with the artist to refine the vision and final piece and reserve final say in major project decisions.

Timeline

The call will close one month after opening with a decision to be made in early August. Ideally the artist will be onsite to install the piece in at a time to be determined in the Fall/Early Winter of 2021 with completion before December 31, 2021. We anticipate installation taking no longer than 5 business days.

Budget

WCU has allocated a maximum of $16,000 for artists fees, materials, and installation. Hospitality and travel fees are set at $1,500.
