The project development site is located with the City of Decatur, at its eastern boundary, one block from the Avondale MARTA station. Bounded by East Ponce de Leon Ave. to the south and Arcadia Ave. to the north, and a transitioning semi-industrial area to the east, the development site is along thoroughfares that serve as gateway entrances to the City of Decatur. The Stone Mountain multi-use trail is located directly across the development along East Ponce de Leon Ave.

The Sam's Crossing retail/residential district is on a 10 acre site and comprises 69,000 sq. ft. of commercial retail space, including a Publix grocery at 2720 East Ponce de Leon Ave. and 290 unit Notion apartments at 175 N. Arcadia Ave. Building construction of the retail development was completed in November 2022 and the the residential apartments will be completed in summer 2022.

Placemaking - We encourage art that generates a sense of place and gathering - innovative art that becomes a destination in and of itself.

Inclusiveness - Art that celebrates the diversity of the surrounding community and that strives to be relatable to all viewers.

Interaction - Art that is immersive and encourages the viewer to touch, move around, move through or otherwise engage with the work.

Sustainability - Art that explores or interacts with the natural and makes use of the renewable and natural materials.

Work must be located in the spaces that accessible to the public during regular working hours. The work must not encroach on or impede access to any streets, sidewalks, or walkways outside the specific site for each work. 

Please refer to the renderings in the attachment for detailed description of Site A, B and C.

Site A: The work can be up to 8 ft in diameter with up to 30 ft. in height. Work will be installed using anchors on a pedestal or into existing concrete pad. 

Site B: The work can be up to 5 ft. in diameter and 40 ft. in height. Work will be installed with a pedestal or directly into existing concrete.

Site C: The work should not more than 3 ft in diameter and up to 10 ft. in height. Work will be installed on a concrete pad.

Work will be acquired as part of the permanent public art collection of the City of Decatur.

The compensation amount for each acquired work includes delivery and transportation to Decatur, Georgia. The Decatur Arts Alliance and the City of Decatur will coordinate site preparation, installation, maintenance and insurance.

 

Application Requirements

Opportunities for art at the project site are limited to small to large sculptures (depending upon the specific site) composed of artistic stonework, metal, and environmental art. The materials must be appropriate for exterior installation and four season weather conditions of North Georgia. 

Work details: We are accepting submissions of completed work as well as work in progress at the time of submission. We will accept maquette and renderings for works in progress.

Completed work:

  1. A written narrative of the work and description including material components, dimension and method of installation.
  2. A minimum of three high quality digital images of the work.
  3. A digital rendering of the work in the proposed site.

Work in progress:

  1. A written narrative of the work in progress, a description including material components and method of installation.
  2. A maquette of the proposed work and digital rendering of the work in the proposed site.

**PLEASE BE AWARE, each attached image will generate an individual application (so that multiple submissions may be considered per artist).  Artists are asked to include descriptions of each image in the text, including if they are to be considered for the call and in which location, or alternatively if the images are examples of previous work not intended for consideration.

Resume: Submit one to two page resume/CV including contact information and highlighting your experience Include three (3) professional references and current contact information.

 

Eligibility Criteria

The Decatur Arts Alliance invites submissions from artists who are eligible to work in the United States. Qualified applicants will be familiar with Decatur, Georgia and the metro Atlanta area. The work must installed by June 30, 2023.
